Jake's Nordic returned to top form on Wednesday at Dover Downs to score a wire-to-wire victory in the $25,000 Open Handicap Trot, while Saint Johns Boy took the $20,000 Jr. Open. Tim Tetrick and Ross Wolfenden won three each.
Using his usually quick speed leaving the starting gate, Tim Curtin ushered the 7-year-old gelding Jake's Nordic right to the front and then controlled the fractions the rest of the way to score his sixth win of the year in 1:55.1, turning back eight rivals to win the $25,000 feature. Self Professed, with Brad Hanners in the bike, finished second while Dyno Trevor and Kevin Sizer took show money.
Owned by Dan and Tom Courtemanche, Jake's Nordic, a Sam Beegle trainee, has now won $139.820 this season and $628,516 lifetime.
Wolfenden drove M & M Harness Racing's veteran Saint Johns Boy to a 1:56.2 victory in the sub-feature $20,000 Jr. Open Trot. The 8-year-old Lindy Lane gelding won for the sixth time this season out closing both Celtic Hall, with Curtin, and race favorite Racsan Jenny, handled by Steve Warrington.
Midwood Stable's Coerfurst took the lead at the start of the $15,500 winners-Over trot and was never headed in a 1:57.1 victory equaling his winning time of the previous week.Hanners, who trains and drives the 10-year-old gelding has now won three races this meet and six during 2006. Sandys Attitude (Morgan) had a perfect two-hole trip but could not overtake the winner after a stretch duel. Honolulu Hunk (Roger Plante) closed well to finish third.
After finishing second in his previous three races, Danes Acres' Long Gone Jo, driven by Tim Tetrick, rolled down the lane to score a 1:55.2 victory In a $10,200 Delaware pace. BJ's Braveheart (Hanners) finished second with Computer Teckie (Plante) the show horse.
Bill Emmons' Cloudy Heights N won a tight photo from Dreaming Big (Brandon Givens) to win a $25,000 claiming allowance in 1:53.3. Tetrick drove the In The Pocket gelding to his third consecutive victory. Mr. Romantic (Jim King) picked up third-place honors. The race marked the end of a consecutive span of eight races that saw Swingingwithashark (Toby Lynch) being claimed. He stepped up in price and finished out of the money. (Dover Downs)
