Vulcanize led wire to wire to win the first of two $48,000 divisions of the Buckette for 3-year-old filly trotters Wednesday at the Delaware, ohio fairgrounds in 1:57.1 for driver Ron Pierce. Pierce cleared to the lead shortly before the opening quarter of :28.3, with Brian Sears content to sit second with Up Front Laura. Vulcanize then led through a :58.4 half and 1:28.3 three-quarters, before coasting to the 3 1/2-length victory. up Front Laura held for second with Tsarina closing for third-place honors for driver Jackie ingrassia. A $225,000 yearling purchase by Audrey Campbell's Lothlorien Equestrian Center of Mississauga, Ont., Vulcanize increased her career earnings (she was unraced at two) to nearly a half-million dollars. The win was the fourth straight for the daughter of Muscles Yankee-My Starchip, a streak that also includes the Hudson Filly Trot elim and final at Yonkers and a Simcoe division at Mohawk. Pippiwhitestockngs turned a two-hole trip into her first win of the year in the second Buckette division. Driven by Jody Jamieson, Pippiwhitestockngs drew clear down the stretch to defeat pacesetter I Gotta Feelin by three lengths in 1:56.3. Ron Pierce took the early lead with I Gotta Feelin from post one, and held that position throughout. Favored Classical Mary and driver Dave Palone moved from fourth first-over approaching the half, but could never clear to the front. She finally gave way around the final turn, which gave Jamieson all the room he needed with Pippiwhitestockngs. Midway down the stretch Pippiwhitestockngs blew by the leader to gain the victory, her first in nine starts. Classical Mary held for show honors.
