Walnut Hall Ltd. mares sell

November 10, 2005 Send To A Friend  | Print View

The dispersal of the majority of Walnut Hall Ltd.'s broodmares took place Thursday at the Standardbred Horse Sale in Harrisburg, with 72 mares selling for a gross of $2.5 million.

Walnut Hall Ltd., which has been operated by Alan Leavitt and his wife, Meg, announced following its September yearling auction that it would sell most of its broodmares and its weanling crop at Harrisburg.

The top price for a broodmare from the Walnut Hall Ltd. consignment was the $155,000 paid for Martini Time, a 5-year-old mare by Sir Taurus from the prolific maternal family of Hambletonian winners Mack Lobell and American Winner. Kentucky breeder Jim Avritt bought Martini Time, who sold in foal to Conway Hall.

Of the 72 mares sold by Walnut Hall Ltd., eight brought prices of $100,000 or more, resulting in an average price of $34,875.

Several of Walnut Hall Ltd.'s broodmares were not consigned to the sale either because they were barren or were 19 years of age or older. The barren mares will be sold at a later date, after they are bred and pronounced in foal.
