War Boots, the venerable Meadows star who had been unable to win in the top class this year, showed the upstarts that these boots are made for pacin’ still as he captured Tuesday’s $25,000 Preferred in 1:50.3. It was his fastest winning mile since 2008.
Owned by Shirley Mitchell of Indiana, War Boots gained prominence at The Meadows over the last several years with a characteristic late brush that brought him such victories as a 2008 mile in 1:49.4, a track record at the time for 4-year-old geldings. His only recent triumphs, however, had come in conditioned events.
That changed Tuesday when he followed first-over cover for trainer/driver Ray Paver and scored at odds of 13-1. Armbro Billow charged through the Lightning Lane for second, 1-1/4 lengths back, with the rallying Rock N Roll Star third.
War Boots is a 6-year-old son of Memphis Flash-Fancy Boots. He pushed his career bankroll to $335,283.
Paver enjoyed training and driving triples while Dave Palone drove four winners and Eric Ledford three on the 14-race card.
