A man has been charged with trespassing at Monticello Gaming and Raceway and authorities are investigating whether he let several horses out of their stalls that led to one being killed when struck by a car traveling on the nearby highway.
Published reports state Phillip Lobosco, 45, of Monticello, was arrested and charged with third-degree criminal trespass on Monday after climbing a fence to get back on the property, three days after he had been asked to leave the grounds for being loud and disturbing other patrons in the parking lot. He was later released on $500 bond. Local police are also investigating whether Lobosco had anything to do with letting the horses loose, an incident which occurred about 1:30 a.m. on Monday.
The horse that was reported to have been killed was South Jersey Devil, a 6-year-old gelded son of Sir Taurus trained by Margaret Cardassi and owned by Alexander Takacs of Monmouth Beach, N.J. South Jersey Devil was winless in 18 starts this year, with his last victory actually coming April 15, 2005, at Buffalo Raceway. He had a career record of 102-4-15-21, a mark of 2:01.3f, and earnings of $49,569.
