Waterstone wins at Big M

Waterstone, the 2-year-old colt trotter named for The Horseman’s Gordon Waterstone, won his career debut Wednesday morning in a baby race at the Meadowlands, scoring in 2:03 for trainer-driver Jimmy Takter. Associate editor Waterstone had hoped he would have been able to write the headline "Waterstone Wins at the Big M" when he was at the track in April for the National Harness Handicapping Contest with a $50,000 first-place prize, but he'll have to settle for this instead.

Takter got away fourth with Waterstone (the horse, not the human) and then moved up first-over past the :32.2 opening quarter. He remained on the outside of the leading Kajan Kooker and driver Mike Lachance through a half of 1:03.1 before settling in second at the 1:33.2 three-quarters. He then wore down the leader in the stretch with an individual final quarter of :28.4 to win by three-quarters of a length. Crypto Man and George Brennan were 2 ¼ lengths back in third.

Bred by Tom Crouch, Waterstone was originally named Looksemintheeye. A son of Yankee Glide out of the Donerail mare PJ’s Nannette, Waterstone was a $70,000 yearling purchase by Christina Takter, John Fielding and Margaret Oweida.

Jimmy Takter also won a baby race with the gelding trotter In Focus in 2:01. The son of SJ’s Photo was a $21,000 yearling purchase by Christina Takter and Fielding. He completed a baby-race trotting trifecta with a victory behind Araptile in 2:01.4. The son of Lindy Lane is owned by Dinosaur Partners.
