Watta Hotshot found the winner's circle for the first time in 2007 while longshot Arts Mattjesty pulled a surprise to win their respective $35,287 Matron 3-Year-Old Colt Pace eliminations Monday at Dover Downs.

Before his Matron elim, Watta Hotshot, second in the Breeders Crown last week, was the richest horse that was winless in 2007. Only 1:51.3 later, the Artiscape gelding scored his first win of the year as Ron Pierce drove the passing lane to overtake Big Business and Tim Tetrick in the final strides to raise his seasonal earnings to $526,496 for owners Sylvia Burke, Weaver Bruscemi LLC, Randy Ringer and JJK Stables.

Big Business, a recent $295,000 purchase at the Harrisburg sale, was second with Artzina closing with a rush for John Campbell taking show money. Tivoli Hanover, a supplemental entry, was fourth.

In the opening elim, Arts Mattjesty, overlooked at 16-1 with the meet's leading driver, Tony Morgan, closed through a wall of contestants approaching the wire to reach the finish line first in 1:53.2. Ghee's House, winner of last month's lucrative $350,900 Progress Pace final was driven to a second-place finish by Ron Pierce. Lindy's Bandit and Tetrick closed well to finish third while Brian Sears guided Kenneth J to fourth to qualify for next week's final.

The victory was the seventh of the season for Arts Mattjesty, a colt by Artsplace owned by Beverly Pagnanelli, Frank Canzone and trainer Bob Sumner.

The first four in each elim return next Monday for the $236,726 Matron final. (Dover Downs)
