Waxman to sue for purse

An attorney representing Daniel Waxman was planning to file a lawsuit Thursday morning against the Hambletonian Society for failure to pay the purse money earned by Loyal Opposition when she won the Breeders Crown Mare Pace at Mohawk Racetrack last month.



Until last May Loyal Opposition raced under the ownership of Waxman's father, Bob. The ownership of the mare changed during the time that Bob Waxman was involved in legal disputes with the Standardbred Horse Sales Company over nonpayment for horses.



"We were asked by the Ontario Racing Commission to withhold the purse payments to the owner, trainer and driver until they complete an investigation into the ownership of the horse Loyal Opposition," said Tom Charters, president of the Hambletonian Society, in explaining the Society's position. "As of this time (Thursday morning at 9 am), however, I have not been notified that we have been sued."



Charters added that the purse money has been put in an escrow account and will be paid once the Ontario commission's investigation is complete. Loyal Opposition is presently entered to compete in the Milton Stakes at Mohawk Racetrack Saturday night.
