February 19, 2009 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Wayne Nickells, who trained such top horses as the stakes-winning trotting fillies Doin' The Town and Baltic Brat, died in Lexington, KY, earlier this week. Nickells, who underwent open heart surgery several years ago, was found dead in his apartment. He was 72.

Nickells, the brother of horseman Bruce Nickells, was born and reared in Illinois and served in the U.S. Army's military police division before eventually going to work for his brother. He later began training on his own, and in the latter years of his career his primary owners were Barbara Baum, who owned Doin' The Town, and Winbak Farms.
