Wearable Art wins duel

Wearable Art out-dueled The Quiet Mon down the stretch and captured the $225,000 Berry�s Creek final in a stakes and season's record 1:50 at the Meadowlands Saturday night. Fresh Deck was third.

In the first big test for 3-year-old colt and gelding pacers this year, driver Ron Pierce and Wearable Art swooped to the lead from the three hole after an opening quarter in :27 by Fresh Deck. Andy Miller and The Quiet Mon started their first-over move at the :55.2 half and at the 1:23.2 three quarters the two elimination winners were stride for stride.

The two continued the nose-to-nose battle into the stretch, but in the last furlong Wearable Art edged away for a one-length victory over The Quiet Mon with Fresh Deck finishing third.

"I kind of had The Quiet Mon right where I needed him to be," Pierce said. "I figured if I was going to beat him, that would be the way to do it. There was a little concern (about The Quiet Mon in the stretch), but the harder I (urged) Art, the harder he went. He has the license to get a lot better."

"I wasn't upset with that (:55.2 half)," added winning trainer-owner Peter Kleinhans. "Originally, I was kind of hoping The Quiet Mon would brush over us and we'd be second behind him. It just seemed like it would be a safer trip. It seemed like we'd be guaranteed to be at worst, second. This way, it was more of a slugfest, but he won it, so it was great. It was a really exciting race."

Wearable Art is a son of Artiscape out of the Presidential Ball mare Lo Gophobia. A private purchase by Kleinhans, he won $70,420 last year with two wins in four starts and his second win in four starts to date this year gives him earnings this year of $134,150. (With files from the Meadowlands)
