WEG cuts purses 5 percent

Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) has announced effective Sunday, July 2, purses at its Standardbred tracks will be decreased five percent as a "result of reduced pari-mutuel wagering on standardbred racing at WEG tracks."

According to a WEG release, in 2006, betting in the Greater Toronto Area on Standardbred, through the end of the Woodbine meet, was off by 6.5 percent compared to the same time in 2005. Specifically on live racing, WEG numbers were off by 9.5 per cent from the same time in 2005.

Also, mutuel clerks at Woodbine/Mohawk went on strike Thursday morning and picket lines are expected to be in place at Woodbine, which will be the site of the prestigious Queen's Plate Thoroughbred race this Sunday. The Mohawk Saturday night harness card features the Canadian Pacing Derby final.
