Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) proposed a one-year contract extension to the Ontario Harness Horse Association existing contract (OHHA) that was unanimously accepted by OHHA members at last night's meeting in Milton. For the past few months Woodbine and OHHA representatives have met in good faith to discuss the terms of a new contract. Further talks will take place in the upcoming year to see if a long-term agreement can be reached for subsequent years. Terms of the one-year deal are the same as they have been for the past two five-year contracts. "We are pleased to have the OHHA support for the extension of our current agreement, and remain optimistic that discussions in the new year will result in a longer term contract," said WEG senior vice president of racing Jamie Martin. In addition to ratifying the one-year contract extension OHHA members also supported Woodbine's application to the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) to pay $250 to all entries that do not finish in the top five. This new trial proposal only applies to horses racing at Woodbine Racetrack. "OHHA will continue to work with our partners at WEG to find contract solutions that work for horsepeople, the two racetracks, and the entire horse racing industry," said OHHA president Jim Whelan. "I am happy that a deal has been reached and that further talks are planned." (WEG)
