WEG rules on top trainer

December 05, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Harnessracing.com has learned Casie Coleman, the leading trainer on the Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) circuit, has been ordered to race her horses out of the detention barn at Woodbine/Mohawk beginning Thursday. Coleman was the 2005 O'Brien Award winner as Canada's Trainer of the Year.

Although the decision by WEG officials to have Coleman race from the detention barn comes less than a week after the death of one of her horses, Tiger Cam, at her barn at Classy Lane Farm, harnessracing.com was told by an unnamed source that the incident did not play a role. The decision was made due to increased pressure and speculation regarding the racing performances of Coleman’s horses and that WEG desires to protect the integrity of its business.

Coleman, 25, leads WEG trainers with 162 wins and $3,165,194(C) in purse earnings. She has a .432 UTR and a win average of 28.9 percent. Overall, her career-high 207 wins place her ninth in North America, with her $3.3 million in purse earnings good for fifth. Her total UTR of .425 ranks her sixth.

Tiger Cam, a 3-year-old son of Yankee Cam, had a 2006 slate of 17-6-1-3 and $74,143 in earnings. The horse had been in Coleman’s barn only two weeks after racing his entire career at Hippodrome de Montreal or Rideau Carleton. He finished seventh in a conditioned race at odds of 8-5 in his only start for Coleman Nov. 23 at Woodbine. He was entered to race Nov. 30 at Woodbine but died earlier that day. The body was sent to University of Guelph for a necropsy.
