WEG wants level field

Saying that Ontario cannot continue to maintain the status quo of turning a blind-eye to online gaming, the Chairman and CEO of the Woodbine Entertainment Group says there must be a level playing field for legitimate gaming businesses to compete with illegal online gaming operations.

The Globe and Mail reports that David Willmot told the government that Ontario should shut down illegal online gaming, or allow the domestic gaming industry to compete with offshore operations by legalizing the industry.

"We'd be happy with either scenario," he said in the Globe article. "The scenario I'm not happy with is status quo. We have laws that make online gambling illegal that are not being enforced because the government can't touch those operators."

Government Services Minister Gerry Phillips introduced legislation on Thursday that would ban all advertising by online gaming companies, but it would also have a big impact on domestic businesses that sell advertising to online gaming companies.

Willmot, however, denies that WEG's support of the legislation is because the racing industry is suffering at the hands of online operations. Instead he contends that he supports the legislation because online gaming is illegal.

"If we tried to open up a sportsbook, or online casino or poker room, the police would be on our doorstep the next day. They know where we are.” (Standardbred Canada)
