Well Said ready for Simcoe

Return Home
September 11, 2009 Send To A Friend  | Print View

On his last visit to Mohawk, Well Said went down in the record books when he set a new stakes, track, and Canadian record of 1:48.1 in winning the $1.5 million Pepsi North America Cup.

With that sort of positive experience, it was only a matter of time before he would be back – and his presence at Mohawk, for a $136,153 division of the Simcoe Stakes, for three-year-old pacers, coincides with that of champion trotter, Muscle Hill, who will contest a $40,000 elimination for the upcoming $1 million Canadian Trotting Classic.

It’s reminiscent of the night of September 6, 2008, when superstars Somebeachsomewhere and Deweycheatumnhowe both went postward in these same events at Mohawk.  ‘The Beach’ neatly captured his Simcoe division, while ‘Dewey’ went down in defeat for the first time in his career, although a week later he would bounce back to take home the big cheque in the Canadian Trotting Classic final.

Well Said currently boasts a record of 11 wins, four seconds, and two thirds in 21 starts, with $2,270,946 earned for Jeffrey Snyder of New York, NY and Lothlorien Stables of Cheltenham, Ontario.  The son of Western Hanover also holds a 1:47.3 speed badge, earned in the $1 million Meadowlands Pace in July.

Having enjoyed two weeks off following a victory in the $500,000 (US) Battle of Brandywine, at Harrah’s Chester Casino on August 16, Well Said put in a sharp qualifying effort at Mohawk on September 4, defeating fellow North America Cup entrant Dial Or Nodial by just short of two lengths in 1:51.4.

Said assistant trainer Toni Rose, “He’s not that great of a shipper, so we gave him an extra week, and the qualifier, to recover and settle in.
He has trained really well all week.  It’s the best he’s been in a while, I think, so with a good post position (#2) and a short fielod, he has every reason to do well on Saturday.”

Although Well Said tops the list of eligibles going into the September 24 Little Brown Jug, his participation in the fabled event is still up in the air, says Rose.  “We’re not sure whether we want to ask him to go heats,” she explains.  “It will depend on how well he comes out of the Simcoe.  After this race we’ll decide.”

Well Said has drawn into the second of two Simcoe Stakes divisions for three-year-old pacing colts on Saturday night, September 12 at Mohawk. A total of 13 ‘glamour boys’ will go postward in the two splits, which are carded as races 2 and 10 (post times 7:51 p.m. and 10:39 p.m.) (WEG)
