Western Cyclone starts Sat.

Western Cyclone, second to Jereme's Jet in this week's Road to the Meadowlands Pace, is scheduled to face older horses on Saturday at the Meadowlands.

"He's doing very good," trainer Travis Alexander said of Western Cyclone. "I couldn't be happier with him. He trained sharp on Saturday morning. I'm going to race him this Saturday at the Meadowlands against older horses. I'm not concerned about that. I want Brian [driver Brian Sears] to race him the final part, to close strong. Then I want to get a speed tightener in him before the North America Cup."

"I wish I had him eligible to the New Jersey Classic," said trainer Steve Elliott of Artistic Fella. "He'll go in the New Jersey Sire Stakes this week. He trained super on Saturday. He just seems to be getting better and stronger."

Elliott trained the 2000 Classic winner Riverboat King and said Artistic Fella compares favorably. "He's handier, and I think he's faster," he said. "Riverboat King came home in :26 regularly, too, but this colt does it regardless of the trip. I haven't seen anyone out there yet that he can't go with."

Western Ace and Total Truth are both in the care of George Teague Jr. Western Ace was third as the betting favorite in the New Jersey Classic on May 27 at the Meadowlands, and Total Truth qualified on May 15, finishing second in a 1:51.1 mile.

"Western Ace came out of the race in good shape," said Teague. "I think he got the worst of the trips in the Classic. He was parked to the quarter, then wound up first-up at the half. Holding for third, I wasn't unhappy with that. Total Truth is sharp. I was very happy with the way he went in his qualifier. He definitely goes in the Burlington Saturday at Woodbine. Western Ace, I'm not quite sure yet. I may put him in there, too."

"It is a long grind for the 3 year olds, but that is how I prepared him," said trainer Tom Fanning of Artstanding, runner-up in the New Jersey Classic. "It did not surprise me he raced as well as he did in the Classic. I expected a big improvement and 'Arty' was nice enough to oblige."
