Western Graduate and driver Yannick Gingras captured Wednesday afternoon's Jugette at the Delaware, Ohio fairgrounds in straight heats, following up her $48,000 elimination victory with a 1:51.3 score in the $144,000 second heat. Her connections will also receive the $60,000 that was reserved for a possible third-heat race-off.
The action was fast and furious in the second heat as favored Southwind Tempo found herself under relentless pressure from the start. Leaving from post one, driver Tim Tetrick left fast but David Miller had the same idea from pst four with Liberty Skiberty. Tetrick refused to yield and the two pacers slugged it out to a :25.4 first-quarter clocking.
Although Liberty Skiberty was able to edge slightly past Southwind Tempo, she remained parked through a :54.2 half, where Dave Palone came up on the outside with me And My Baby and then swung three wide to move even closer toward Southwind Tempo. Southwind Tempo then found herself valiantly trying to hold onto the lead against Me And My Baby as three quarters was reached in 1:22.4.
Meanwhile, the entire race Gingras sat on the inside behind Southwind Tempo, and he was able to move his charge to the outside turning for home. Although Me And My Baby was able to take a short lead midway down the stretch, she was unable to hold off the late-rallying Western Graduate, who reached the wire a neck in front of her rival. Southwind Tempo was able to hold onto third.
"This is a nice filly but we've been chasing Southwind Tempo all year," said trainer Mickey Burke, who conditions the 3-year-old daughter of Western Hanover for owners Sylvia Burke, Tom Cherichello, George Leon and Lawrence Karr.
For her efforts Wednesday, Western Graduate eaerned $146,400, with her 2007 bankroll blossoming to $313,670.
