Western Hanover euthanized

August 26, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Harness Racing Communications has announced that Hanover Shoe Farms has released a statement announcing the death of top pacing stallion Western Hanover at 1:15 pm Sunday.

The statement reads, in part, "Western Hanover was euthanized at 1:15 p.m. today (Sunday, August 26)."

The 18-year-old stallion had complications after surgeries for a scrotal hernia and to remove part of his small intestine and, according to the statement, "...ruptured his large colon. Due to extreme abdominal contamination and very poor prognosis to repair the damage, the decision was made to humanely euthanize Western Hanover. He will be missed by all."

Last Sunday the horse was in discomfort and his attending veterinarian at the Marion DuPont Scott Equine Medical Center discovered that a section of his small intestine had died.

“He had a blood clot in a vessel that supplied blood to the small intestine, and that part of his intestine died,” explained Hanover's chief veterinarian, Dr. Bridgett Jablonsky, last week. “They took out 20 feet of his small intestine. The rule of thumb is you can take out up to 50 percent of the small intestine with good results, and they took out less than that.”

Western Hanover has ranked first or second among the sport’s top money-winning pacing sires in every year but once since 1999. He has stood at stud at Hanover Shoe Farms in Pennsylvania since his retirement from racing in 1992.
