Western Shore Leads Canadian Pacing Derby Field

August 09, 2008 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Western Shore used a take-no-prisoners approach in capturing Saturday's lone $50,000 elimination for the Canadian Pacing Derby over a sloppy oval at Mohawk Racetrack.

Mark MacDonald sent the strapping five-year-old son of Western Hanover - Artomatic straight to the front from post five and laid down splits of :27, :55.2 and 1:22.4, before kicking in with a strong final quarter of :27.2 to win in 1:50.1.

Western Shore was never seriously threatened throughout the mile and easily turned back the closing Zooka with the pocket-sitting Silent Swing holding on for the show spot.

The top seven finishers in the field earned a birth into next Saturday's $702,000 Canadian Pacing Derby Final.

The other four qualifiers included Bigtime Ball, Eagle Luck, Manhardt and Hagi. They will join Artistic
Fella, Mister Big and Won The West who all received a bye as the highest money earners in the group.

By virtue of the win, the connections of Western Shore got to choose their post position for next week and opted for post one.

The victory was the fourth this season in 18 starts for Western Shore who is trained by Erv Miller. The lion's share of the purse boosted his seasonal take to just over $240,000 and just shy of the $600,000 mark lifetime.

Here is a look at the entire field for the $702,000 Canadian Pacing Derby in post position order:

3. Won The West
4. Hagi
5. Artistic Fella
