On a blustery winter night such as Monday, a shot of whiskey is favored by some bettors to warm the cockles of the heart. At Woodbine, Blended Whiskey did indeed do the heart good, as he delivered a smooth two-length victory in the single $20,000(C) elimination for the Ontario-sired Autumn Series contest for 2-year-old pacing colts and geldings. Sent off as the marginal favorite, Blended Whiskey, with Dave Bougton in the bike, took shelter from the storm while letting Allamerican Extra and Tony Kerwood do the heavy lifting on the front end. Just past the half-mile marker, Boughton sent his colt three wide to overtake. When pocket-sitter Lakers Vett (Phil Hudon) broke stride and had to backpedal, that opened the door for Blended Whiskey to pour it on. The Rambaran gelding crossed the wire in a new lifetime mark of 1:54.2, with Herestopatrick (Jack Moiseyev) an out-of-nowhere second, and Allamerican Extra, third. Paul Lindsey of Fergus, Ont., bred and owns Blended Whiskey, who scored his second lifetime visit to the winner’s circle. Don Lindsey trains. The gelding paid $8.30, $4.80, and $4.20 for the win. The $40,000 Ontario-sired Autumn Series final for freshman pacing colts and geldings is scheduled for next Monday, Dec. 8. (WEG)
