Whosethemaster slugged it out with Hillcrest Victory through the stretch and got up in the final strides for a neck victory in 1:56.4 in the $53,000 Charles Singer Memorial Final for 3-year-old trotters Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Whosethemaster’s victory in the Singer pushed his career earnings to $126,184. Lifetime, he has 12 wins, 10 seconds and five thirds from 35 starts. The son of Master Lavec is owned by his breeders â€" Umholtz Racing Stable of Northfield, Ohio; Kennedy Sports Corp. of Phoenix, Arizona; Greg Martin of Columbus, Ohio and Michael Uhrin of Grove City, Ohio.

Whosethemaste's time was one-fifth of a second off the stakes record. The victory was his fifth of the year.

“I know he’s a very headstrong horse, Miller said. “He’s very good-gaited but tough to steer sometimes. If he would behave himself, you can control him and rate him. He’s got good gate speed but I knew he could never go wire-to-wire. So I pulled him first up, and he just ground them down.

"A friend of mine in Ohio, Clair Umholtz, has been training the horse out there all along, said Ron Coyne Jr., who has conditioned the horse in New Jersey. “He thought he was a nice trotter and would fit well in this series. He’s a very aggressive horse. But once you put him in to the race, he’s actually quite nice to drive. It’s just getting him to that point which is difficult. I thought he had a chance to win. But I knew he would need a bit of luck."--Meadowlands release
