Widger to drive at Hoosier Park 2 days a week

Several new names have graced Hoosier Park’s entry sheets during the first week of racing, including Sam Widger, a veteran of the Chicago circuit. Widger was on hand for the opening day program Tuesday, March 24, winning the $25,000 Invitational Handicap trot behind Speed N The Tunnel.

“The plan is to spend Tuesdays and Saturdays here,” the winner of more than 3,300 races explained. “I like racing here in Indiana. It’s a nice environment with friendly people.”

Widger said that trainer Bruce Pacitti asked him to come to the Anderson track to drive his horses. He is optimistic that he’ll have opportunities to drive for other trainers, like his victory in the feature with Brett Wilfong’s charge, but also realizes drives are also hard to come by as many Hoosier horsemen drive their own. He made it clear he has no plans to relocate from the Windy City.

“It’s tough to come here and be a full-time catch driver,” Widger noted. “Chicago is my home. My family is there; my church is there. I just want to see if I can have a little fun.”--By James Platz
