Wiles to the rescue at MR

Return Home
August 30, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

It was Wiles to the rescue Tuesday afternoon at Monticello Raceway as the racetrack’s general manager Shawn Wiles’s quick thinking before one of five New York Sire Stakes divisions likely aided in a victory for Naughty Nunu.

At odds of 9-1 Naughty Nunu was the third longest price in the race, but he was about to be scratched after losing a shoe during post parade. After being brought back into the paddock by driver Mark Beckwith, the blacksmith was unable to duplicate the aluminum padded full swedge bar shoe. The caretaker made the decision to scratch the son of Conway Hall but then Wiles, who was nearby at the time, made a call to the racetrack crew who then went out onto the track and searched for the original shoe.

After scouring the surface the shoe was found and replaced on Naughty Nunu’s left front hoof. Naughty Nunu then went out and won the $44.522 contest with a 2:02.3 effort over the “good” racetrack.
