The 2-year-old trotting colt Windsong Espoir continued his winning ways, cruising to his ninth victory of the season in the $300,000 Ontario Sire Stakes Super Final at Woodbine Saturday night, while the trotting filly Super Final went to Delphic, an upset winner once Bella Dolce took herself out of the race by breaking stride at the start.
The son of Kadabra surged to the front early from the outside post and utterly intimidated his competition. Never seriously challenged, the 1-9 favorite coasted home in 1:57.0, improving his freshman record to nine wins in 10 starts.
Steve Condren drove Windsong Espoir for trainer Brad Maxwell and owners Peter Heffering, Jerry Vanboekel, William Loyens and Hope Stable.
It worked out really really good," said Condren of the race. "We got some good fractions and came home really strong. He’s been off three weeks and change and Brad and the crew just did a heck of a job to bring him this far, this late in the season.
Maxwell indicated the Super Final was the last start of the season for Windsong Espoir.
Bella Dolce lined up in post one behind the gate but never got into the race, breaking stride despite regular driver Paul MacDonell's best efforts. The Kadabra filly out of Pizza Dolce made up about 15 lengths, but then broke stride again and finished far back.
Delphic, a daughter of Striking Sahbra, picked up the pieces despite starting from post nine and won for just the second time this season. Rene Laarman trains the winner for owners Melvin Martman and John and John Fielding.
