Winning Mister hadn’t raced since December 13, but he was adding Lasix. The public wasn’t certain what that combination might mean, sending him off a middling 9-2.
Dick Stillings hustled Winning Mister to the front in a conditioned trot Wednesday at The Meadows, and the 6-year-old son of Angus Hall-Winning Missbrenda didn’t stop until he established a track record of 1:52.4. That shattered the old mark of 1:54.1 for older stallion trotters held jointly by Superfast Stuart, Voila American and Speed Bomb. It also is the fastest mile this year by an older trotting stallion on a five-eighths-mile track.
Fractions for the record-setting mile were :27.1, :55.1 and 1:23.1. While Walt Carroll had been handling Winning Mister while he raced on the East Coast last season and qualified him at the Meadowlands earlier this year, Rich Gillock has him at The Meadows. The veteran trotter now boasts $797,944 in career earnings for owner/breeder Bob Key.
Greg Grismore drove four winners while Randy Tharps and Stillings each fashioned a three-bagger on the 15-race card. (The Meadows)
