Witch on trial at Big M

Witch Trials is one of the fillies hoping to upset 9-5 morning line favorite Southwind Tempo in the $60,000 Tender Loving Care final on Friday night at the Meadowlands.

Co-owned by Delaware-based reinsman Kevin Sizer, Witch Trials is rated at 10-1 from post three in the evening’s featured seventh race. The lightly-raced filly, who is racing out of the barn of trainer Philip Mitchell at the Meadowlands, has a record of three wins in five career starts. She finished third in both preliminary legs of the Tender Loving Care Series.

"I'm very much looking forward to the final on Friday,” said Sizer, who will drive the filly since Ron Pierce opted instead for Princess Albatross. “The first three starts of her career, she showed some ability down here (Delaware). She won them all, then I shipped her up to the Meadowlands. The first start she needed, and I had to tinker with her shoes. Then, last week, even though she was third again, she came up real sick after. She's better now and I expect her to be first or second this week. If she's not, I'll be surprised."

Sizer, of Middletown, Del., shares ownership of Witch Trials with Ralph Brumbaugh of Greenville, Ohio. The daughter of Artiscape-Witchcraft was a $16,000 yearling purchase at Harrisburg.

"She's a half sister to Sleep Easy (1:51.2, $464,011),” Sizer noted. “He was a terror on the half-mile. I haven't raced her on one yet, but I suspect she'll be OK with it." (Meadowlands)
