Without Donato, Scharf waiting for his 2 year olds

Owner David Scharf, who enjoyed a dream season in 2007 with the superlative Donato Hanover, didn’t hesitate to sink a lot of that Donato money right back into the business and is currently keeping track of his 22 two-year-olds in training.

With that many youngsters training down, one of them must be a head turner, right? Right now Scharf seems content to sit on the sidelines and let the chips fall where they may.

“I am doing my best this year not to get to high on any of them,” said Scharf. “Let the trainers do their jobs and come July-August-September, I will have a better handle on it. There obviously are, however, some horses my trainers like more than others at this point.”

Scharf has carefully spread this wealth of young stock around, and currently his band of freshman can be found in several barns.

“I have my 2-year-olds with Steve Elliott, Noel Daley, Joe Holloway, Brett Bittle, Richard Norman, Chris Oakes, Ed Hart and Sam Noble,” he said.

Many of his horses are owned in partnership, as was Donato Hanover, which would account for the diversity of trainers.

Among his juveniles are two colts he bought at Lexington with David McDuffee. Better Things, a Bettor’s Delight colt they partnered in on to the tune of $170,000, and America, a Conway Hall colt who was hammered down at $175,000, are both well into their training, but Scharf is making no predictions for either of these two high-ticket items.

“David McDuffee and I bought two horses and they are fine up to now,” said Scharf.

As for what exciting things might lie ahead in 2008, Scharf seems to be more interested in the top-notch horses that are owned by others.

“Its going to be exciting watching my partner and friend Jerry Silva's two returning champions, Snow White and Deweycheatumnhowe,” said Scharf.  “I’ll be pulling for them!”--By David Mattia
