Woodbine racetrack woes

Return Home
July 25, 2006 Send To A Friend  | Print View

Although Woodbine has been using its Standardbred racetrack to contest Thoroughbred races since July 8 due to the renovation of the main track to Polytrack, recent heavy rains have prompted the track to cancel some of those contests. Woodbine canceled its last seven inner-track races last Sunday, and it also canceled its entire race card last Wednesday and the last dirt race on Friday.

"We took down some of the slope on the harness track, but there's still a grade on the turns," Chris Evans, Woodbine's vice president of racing, told The Daily Racing Form. "It's great for the sake of the horses negotiating the turns, and the jockeys love the banking. But when you put a Thoroughbred sand cushion on top of that hard harness track, then you do run the risk of losing that track during heavy rain. The water just washes the sand right off."
