Monday night, Woodbine Racetrack began its once-a-week experiment with seven-eighth mile (seven furlong) races, and it took just one event to break an 83-year-old world record which was subsequently lowered twice more during the card.
When the 3-year-old filly trotter Summerhill Abra won the first seven-eighths mile race on the program with a 1:43.1, effort it broke the previous world mark for trotters at that distance of 1:46 ¼ set by Truax at North Randall, The seven-eighths mile pacing mark already belongs to Woodbine as Miabunny covered the distance in 1:36.4 in 2005. The fastest paces on the Dec. 1 card were the 1:38.2 victories by PL Brittalion and Ozark Rayama.
Wagering on the program showed an increase of more than $200,000 from the previous Monday, but Woodbine's vice president of Standardbred racing, Bruce Murray, said it was too early to note any firm impact on betting, noting last Monday was the last part of the month and this week is the first of December. Murray added that customers and horsemen will be asked their opinions following the one-month experiment.
