Woodbine win in the irons

March 24, 2007 Send To A Friend  | Print View

In the Irons got up in the absolute last jump to take a thrilling edition of the final in the Apaches Fame Pacing Series on Friday night at Woodbine. Phil Hudon piloted the bay son of Mach Three to the neck tally over Sky Tantrum in 1:53.2. Cam Cool, the 4-5 public choice, was third, beaten three-quarters of a length.

It was the New York-bred's first win of the season and third of his career for trainer Randy Hill, who owns a piece of the colt with Mike Davis and Leslie Davis.

The $50,000(C) event for sophomore colts and geldings featured Cam Cool, who was undefeated in four in 2007. He looked well on his way to victory after establishing command before the half-mile mark, cutting it in :57.2. He poured it on heading into the turn (1:25.3) and led by two in the stretch before being collared late by Sky Tantrum.

In the Irons appeared bottled up in the stretch and lacked racing room until very late, when he responded with quick flourish under Hudon's aggressive handling.

In the Irons, now with career earnings of $63,870(C), finished second to Cam Cool in both early legs of the series. (WEG)
