World champion Giant Diablo is retired

July 17, 2008 | Print View

World champion trotting mare Giant Diablo was retired Friday, three days after a sub-par training mile at a New Jersey farm for trainer Roger Walmann. The 8-year-old mare, who set a world record last fall at The Red Mile with a 1:50.1 victory, last raced in the Elitlopp in late May in Sweden and was in the U.S. preparing to return to compete in stakes races on this continent.

The Swedish-based Walmann returned to his native country on Thursday where he advised owner Tommy Jacobson to retire the mare.

"I finally realized that we shouldn't push her any more," Walmann told harnessracing.com's European correspondent Lars G. Palm on Friday. "It wasn't lameness, but a feeling that she didn't need to race anymore."

Giant Diablo will remain in the U.S. under the current supervision of Johan Untersteiner, the young Swedish driver who was in the sulky behind her in her world-record mile. Untersteiner is in New Jersey to drive Surtees Hanover in a 3-year-old open at the Meadowlands Friday night and then in the Hambletonian elims Saturday, July 26.

A winner of 28 of 72 career starts and more than $1.8 million, Giant Diablo will likely be bred to either 2007 Horse of the Year Donato Hanover or Andover Hall next year.
