Wrenn bags five in Indiana Downs opener

Peter Wrenn stole the show opening night at Indiana Downs. Fresh off winning the driving title at Hoosier Park, the Michigan native collected five wins on the 13-race card. The veteran set the tone early, scoring victories in the first three races on the program.

 

Wrenn guided favorite Deputy Mason to a two and one-half length victory in the season opener, stopping the clock in 1:59. Trained by Rick Redder, the four-year-old Delphi’s Oracle gelding won for the third time in 2009. The time established a new lifetime mark for Deputy Mason.

 

In the night’s second race, Wrenn and 13-1 T T Tiger upset favored Powerful Pete by a neck in 1:56.4. The Electric Yankee colt, a full brother to Indiana Sires Stakes champion mare Valley Electric, earned his first career win for trainer Karlee Roach. The freshman was making his third start for owner Bernard Brown in the $9,000 contest for Indiana-sired pacers.

 

“I think a colt like this is going to get better,” Wrenn said. “He beat a nice horse and showed some guts.”

 

Wrenn’s other victories came with Up And At ‘Em (1:54.4), freshman Ithrowfitz (1:56) and Delightful Five (1:53).

 

The second division for Indiana-sired colt pacers was won in wire-to-wire fashion by Ombre Art and Ricky Macomber. The Royal Art colt won handily by two and three-quarter lengths for owner and trainer Ewell Binkley. Favored Dublo Six finished second for driver Dan Shetler.

 

Macomber enjoyed a solid opening night as well, driving three winners on the program. A former Hoosier Park leading driver, Macomber finished second to Wrenn at the Anderson track this spring.
