Binions, last in the early going, snapped a stubborn favorite Omen Hanover at the wire of Yonkers Raceway's co-featured $40,000 Filly and Mare Open Handicap Pace Friday evening. With Greg Grismore driving for trainer Ronnie Burke, Binions--ordered to begin from post position No. 7--was at the back of the bus early while Miss Galvinator A (Larry Stalbaum) tried her luck with the baton. This Miss and Slaley (Cat Manzi) were 1-2 through a :27.1 opening quarter-mile, 56-second intermission and 1:25.1 three-quarters. Omen Hanover (Dan Dube), last week's bridemaid and this week's 17-10 choice fromt he eight-hole, had left for a seat sixth. She began her methodical grind to engage Miss Galvainator A. The people's perference did win the battle against the pace-setter, only to lose the war. Binions stalked the fave, tipped wide and prevailed by a head in 1:55.1. Miss Galvinator A, Patty Ben Beau (Jordan Stratton) and Longshot Linda (Jason Bartlett) rounded out the payees. For Binions, 5-year-old daughter of Bettor's Delight owned by Newman Racing Stable, she returned $20.40 (sixth choice) for her ninth win in 27 seasonal starts. The exacta paid $60.50, with the triple returning $431.50. Friday night's co-featured, $40,000 Open Handicap Trot saw eight-hole assignee American Lane (Manzi) defend his marquee trot title, going over the $800,000 career cash figure in the process. American Lane, the 8-5 choice, left into a three-hole behind San Remo Kosmos (Bouchard) and Light Headed (Bartlett). The former led through intervals of :28; 58.4 and 1:28.3. Armbro Copenhagen (Ray Schnittker) offered a minimal first-over challenge, so San Remo Kosmos Kosmos owned a length-and-a-quiarter lead into the lane. Light Headed ducked inside, with American Lane skimming the cones even tighter. The latter edged away late, prevailing by a length in 1:58.1. Light Headed, San Remo Kosmos, Armbro Copenhagen and Prayer I Am (Jim Devaux) also made money. For American Lane, a 6-year-old Primrose Lane gelding trained by Carl Cito Jr. for co-owners David Scharf and Jerry Silva, he paid $5.30 for 13th win in 35 '08 tries. The exacta paid $52, with the triple returning $138.50. (Yonkers)
