Yonkers to open Nov. 3?

Yonkers Raceway has applied to the New York State Racing & Wagering Board to reopen for live racing on Friday, Nov. 3, one day before the Art Rooney eliminations for 3-year-old colt pacers are scheduled. The track opened the first phase of its video gaming parlor Oct. 11, which Timothy Rooney Jr., Yonkers’ general counsel and son of owner Timothy Rooney, has been quoted as saying was a “soft opening” with no paid advertising or major promotion.

According to reports, Empire City at Yonkers Raceway’s video gaming machines have netted $6.1 million since beginning operation, with $3.3 million going toward an education fund. About 10 percent of the remaining amount goes toward casino administration, with the rest earmarked for purses.

The track is also contending with a fire last Thursday night/Friday morning that heavily damaged the drivers' building. Trailers are going to be brought in to temporarily replace the building.
