The undefeated trotter, You’re Next, sidelined nearly 10 months due to an injury, will try to set the track record for most consecutive wins at Pompano Park Harness Track Wednesday.
You’re Next, a 5-year-old gelding by Yankee Paco, is 12 for 12 lifetime and tied with the pacer, Lady Netty N (1999), for the track record. You’re Next will start from post four for driver Wally Hennessey in the third race at Pompano Park and they are listed as the 9-5 morning line favorite.
In his last start on March 13, 2006, You’re Next scored his 12th straight win with a personal best 1:55.2 victory, but within the next couple of days there was trouble.
Trained by Fred Cohen, You’re Next had re-injured a pulled suspensary in his right hind leg.
“It was one of those unlucky “breaks” in racing you don’t want to talk about.” Cohen said. “We were one start away from setting the track record for most consecutive wins. Newspaper reporters came to the track to do stories on the horse. Even Paul Harvey talked about You’re Next’s 12 straight wins on his national radio show. And then he ends up on the shelf again.”
In prepping for his attempt at the track record, You’re Next competed in three qualifying races at Pompano Park over a three-week period. The best effort was a 2:00.1 victory on Dec. 29, romping by 9 1/2 lengths.
“I don’t feel that he is back to his former self.” Cohen said. “Ten months away from racing is a long time. We will see how he does Wednesday. I hope he can set the record and show me that he still can race well.”
Deborah Sassen of Coral Springs owns You’re Next and will make sure that her horse’s good luck charm will be trackside for the race. The good luck charm is Deborah’s mother, 90-year-old Ruth Dunay, who has not missed one of You’re Next’s 12 wins at Pompano Park.
