Talk About Me, who has been chasing Tweedle Dum for the past few months in the Open Handicap trotting events at Pompano Park, finally caught him Wednesday night and scored a narrow win in 1:58 over a track dulled a bit by heavy afternoon rain.

Talk About Me, a 4-year-old Florida bred—he’s by Keystone Smothers—had been second to Tweedle Dum the last two times they met but got a heady drive from Anthony Napolitano to pull of the upset.

Indeed, it was Tweedle Dum, with Walter Ross Jr. driving, who was, as usual, in front through panels of :28.2, :59.2 and 1:28.4. Stablemate Lori Louise was in the garden spot for the first five-eighths with Talk About Me, who had left from the seven post to find a good early spot, nestled in third. On the backstretch, “Nap” sent Talk About Me into contention and along side Tweedle Dum turning for home and finally wore that one down in the final strides. The official winning margin was a “neck.”

U Toe The Bike (Wally Hannessey) was third with Thishorsewillfly (Ranger) and Blushfire (Matt Kakaley) earning minor awards.

For Talk About Me, owned by A & M Floral of Pierson, Fla., and trained by Bob Schell, it was his sixth win of the year in 21 starts and sent his lifetime bounty just shy of $100,000 lifetime.

In Florida Sunshine State Stakes action, Famous Mark, FIMO, Be Be Bonita, Smothers and Wandering Dream were all victorious in their respective divisions.

Famous Mark, handled by Bruce Ranger, held off the late surging Excalibur MC (Mel Turcotte) to score in the 3-year-old trotting division for colts and geldings. Famous Mark scored by a neck in 2:00 flat after cutting fractions of :30.1, 1:00.4 and 1:30.1. Chief Cochise, with Bob Williams Jr. driving, finished third in the mile.

For Famous Mark, a gelded son of Famously, it was his fourth straight win and sixth of the year in 10 starts for owners Glenn Del Russo, Daryl Bier and the Pomtambo Stable.

FIMO made amends from an unfortunate miscue on an off track last week by scoring an easy wire to wire win for Ranger in the 3-year-old filly trot.

This daughter of Anythings Possible, owned by the Sunshine State Steeds of Delray Beach, Fla., clocked fractions of :30.3, 1:01.1 and 1:31.4 before romping home in :29.4 to score the handy victory in 2:01.3.

Latest Fashion, driven by Bob Williams Jr., was 2 1/4 lengths away in second with Ima Jean Too and driver Bob Roberts teaming up for third.

Be Be Bonita won the other event for the sophomore trotting fillies with a sharp 2:02 win for Marc Aubin, who handled the lines for owner-trainer Richard Lauzon.

Aubin, away second with his filly, made a quick—and ultimately winning—move just before the opening quarter (:30.4) to take the lead and then carved out the rest of the mile, clocking panels of 1:02 and 1:32.1 before sprinting home an eased up winner.

“Bonita” is also by Anythings Possible and won for the fifth time this year in 10 starts to push her lifetime bounty close to $40,000.

Monalisa Can (Ranger) was second and Abracadabra Can (Matt Kakaley) finished third.

Smothers took home the prize in the 2-year-old trot for colts and geldings, edging by the stubborn Timer late in the mile to score by a length in 2:03.3.

With Bruce Ranger at the helm, Smothers let Timer and Wally Hennessey cut all the fractions—:30.2, 1:02.3 and 1:33.4—before bursting out of the pocket turning for home and then on to victory.

Bull Durham (Tom Wantz) was a distant third.

Wandering Dream gave Bruce Ranger his fourth win of the night in the Sunshine Stake Stakes for 2-year-old trotting fillies.

Ranger sent the daughter of Crown Can right to the front and led every step of the way, carding fractions of :31.2, 1:03.1 and 1:34.4 before tripping the final timer in 2:06.4.

Trained by Tom Harmer for owner Michael Polansky, it was Wandering Dream’s third straight win and fourth of the year in eight starts.

Finally, in the Florida Amateur Driving Club trot, Vicasso, given a picture perfect drive by Bill Bigler, got his first win of the year in 27 starts for owner-trainer David Myrick. (Pompano)
