The horses who are used in the Harness Racing Youth League summer camp season shipped north this week to begin their annual conditioning program. The horses “winter” at Brittany Farm where they receive the best of care and lots of pampering. Once the weather breaks, arrangements are made for them to be transported to volunteer trainers who are responsible for daily jogging, care, and shoeing until the actual program begins in mid June.
This year, thanks to the kindness of Odds On Racing, all 8 horses were loaded onto the trailer and delivered to the Chicago area. Volunteer trainers include Donna Ozment, Debby Searle, Elizabeth Wegmann, John and Cody Stephenson as well as Robin Schadt.
“With our first stop of the summer beginning at the premier training facility in Crete on June 18, efforts were made to keep the stable in close proximity. HHYF is very appreciative of Odds On who offered to pick up and deliver the horses to their destination. This process is usually a big task but it was made extremely easy this year due to the cooperation of the entire staff at Odds On Racing” explained Ellen Taylor, HHYF’s executive director.
Once the HRYL camp at Odds On is completed on June 22, the schedule continues with events to be held at Harrington Raceway June 29 to July 3, Vernon Downs July 6 to July 10, The Meadows July 13 to July 17, and Indiana Downs July 21 to 25. These are each Level 1 events and are for 11 to 13 year olds.
he final event called HRYL – Level 2 will be held at The Red Mile in Lexington, KY on August 7 to 10. It is designed for kids and parents to advance their knowledge of harness racing. Young people who have participated in Harness Racing Youth League or who have a strong interest in racing and are 14 years old or older are welcome to attend.
