Both Matron Stakes trots for 3 year olds Sunday night at Dover Downs were won in convincing fashion by the public choices. In the $214,163 filly trot, Yursa Hanover took control after Mike Lachance drove Windsong Soprano to an early lead. After the half it was all Tim Tetrick and Yursa Hanover, in a 1:53.4 conquest, her seventh win this season for Benoit Baillargeon, who trains the Windsong’s Legacy-Yankee Topaz filly for Canadian owner Richard Berthiaume. Windsong Soprano held on for second, with Musical Mystery third with Ron Pierce in the bike.
The $253,537 Matron Stakes sophomore colt trot was the “swansong” for Swan For All. The lightly raced Andover Hall-Swan Lake colt ended his career with a 1:55.1 victory, his fourth in six starts this season, with a second and eight career wins in only 11 races with two seconds. His only time out of the money came when he broke stride in the Breeders Crown.
David Miller moved the big colt into the lead just past a :27.4 opening panel and dictated the rest of the race. John Carver, Mystical Marker and Diamond Creek Farms own Swan For All, now slated for stallion duty in early 2010. The Matron first-place check almost doubled his previous bankroll, that now stands at $309,986. Calchips Brute was strong in the lane and finished second for driver-trainer Trond Smedshammer, with Hot Shot Blue Chip and driver Pierce finishing third. (Dover Downs)
