Not only did Highland Candy Bar capture the $60,000 Autumn Stakes final for sophomore pacing fillies Friday evening at Woodbine, but the miss did it the hard way, parked out the entire mile at odds of 35-1.
Coming into the featured event, the daughter of Mach Three-Oh My Dear was winless in 25 starts this season for trainer-driver Garrett Whelan and owner Highland Thoroughbred Farm.
Carly Hollywood (Sylvain Filion), the post time favorite, protected rail position as she led her nine rivals past the opening panel in :27.1. Lucky Taryn (Anthony MacDonald) was in the pocket with Charolettes Maggie (Paul MacDonell) still on the outside. Heading towards the half, Filion allowed Charlottes Maggie to clear to the front, but quickly re-took the lead before the half in :57.
That left Highland Candy Bar as the first-over attacker and the three-time winner was within one and a quarter lengths of Carly Hollywood at three-quarters in 1:26.
It was an all-out battle for Highland Candy Bar as Whelan took over command from Carly Hollywood at the top of the lane and was able to hold off all challengers in deep stretch to stop the timer in a life’s best clocking of 1:55.3. Both elimination winners from last week rounded out the triactor as Shadys Art (Luc Ouellette) finished second with Machs Delicacy (Mike Saftic) third.
With the win, Highland Candy Bar lifted her career earnings to $77,430. She paid $79.90 for the win. (WEG)
