$85,000 top price at Land of Lincoln yearling sale

The annual Land of Lincoln Yearling Sale was held Sunday, Aug. 11, in Sherman, Ill., conjunction with racing at the Illinois State Fair in nearby Springfield. Despite the fact that the Illinois legislature has not expanded gaming at the racetracks, prices at this year's sale rose 28.4 percent from 2012.The average price for the 121 yearlings sold—most of them from Dr. Ken and Pat Walker's breeding operation and carrying the "Fox Valley” moniker—was $10,320, with a median price of $7,000.

The sale topper was Fox Valley Flame, a Sportsmaster colt out of She's Redhot, the dam ofmajor winners Brian And Kellie p,4, 1:49.4 ($203,226), Hot And Sporty p,2, 1:50.2 ($518,419), She's So Hot p,2, 1:51.1 ($238,501) and He's So Hot p,3, 1:50.2 ($257,890). William Delong, who has campaigned such notables as last year's Indiana champion Always About Katey, had the final bid at $85,000.

Delong also bought several other yearlings, including Fox Valley Padre, a colt by Sportsmaster out of Pacific Sister K, the dam of Doubleshotascotch p,4, 1:51f ($641,417) and Mystical MJ p,3, 1:51.1 ($254,766), for $35,000 and Fox Valley Audit, another Sportsmaster colt and this one a brother to Fox Valley Action p,2, 1:52.2 ($193,512), for $30,000.

The second highest-price at the sale was the $50,000 bid by Jim Bafia for Fox Valley Lovrboy. The trotting-bred son of Powerful Emotion is the seventh foal of Love You More (by Conway Hall), who has produced Fox Valley Lover 3, 1:55 ($285,588).--harnessracing.com
