Maple Grove Smoky, a roan filly by Donerail who learned her lessons at the Del Mar racetrack in California this past winter, won the first stakes race of her career when she captured a Simpson Stakes division at The Red Mile Friday night in a fast 1:56.3.

Joe Mullins trains and owns Maple Grove Smoky while Brian Sears handled the driving. The filly has recently recovered from illness, said Mullins, who was at The Red Mile to celebrate the victory.

Reinvent, the Merrie Annabelle Stakes winner, made a serious drive for the wire in the homestretch, but became rough gaited and broke stride. It was her first start since the Merrie Annabelle.

Other divisions for 2-year-old trotting fillies were won by Soutaine Hanover, another Donerail-sired filly, in 2:00.3 and Miss Possessed, a daughter of Self Possessed, in 1:59.1.
