Allard fined $200 for Gold Cup "celebration"

Driver Simon Allard celebrated his victory with Somewhere Fancy in the $60,000 Guardian Gold Cup & Saucer on Aug. 19 at Red Shores Racetrack at the Charlottetown Driving Park on Prince Edward Island by lifting himself backwards in the sulky as he reached the finish line. Allard's celebratory actions have now cost him $200 as a result of being fined by the track judges for being "careless and reckless by taking both feet out of stirrups prior to end of a race."
Harnessracing.com conducted an informal poll last week among various horsemen, including drivers, to ask their reaction to Allard's celebration, and found it pretty much split 50-50 as to whether Allard's actions were good for the sport.
Driver Andy Miller summer up the opinions of most, no matter which side of the fence they were on. "That's Simon," Miller said with a smile. Dave Palone also said it was "vintage Simon."
