Always B Miki paced the fastest mile in harness racing history Sunday afternoon at The Red Mile, capturing the $138,000 Allerage Farms Open Pace in 1:46 flat. The time not only lowered the previous race record of 1:46.4 shared by Somebeachsomewhere, He's Watching, Warrawee Needy and Holborn Hanover, it also bested the time-trial mark of 1:46.1 set by Cambest in 1993.
"It's a record no one will ever forget," said an emotional trainer Jimmy Takter in the winner's circle.
David Miller moved Always B Miki from third after an opening fraction of :26.1, reaching the half on top in :52.2. The son of Always A Virgin rolled on to a 1:19.4 three-quarters. With the roar of the large on-track crowd growing as the field of six paced down the stretch, Always B Miki closed out his record mile with a final quarter of :26.1.
"He felt good the whole way," understated Miller. "He's an incredible horse who does incredible things."
Always B Miki is owned by Bluewood Stable, Roll The Dice Stable and Christina Takter. The win was his ninth of the year in 15 starts, sending his seasonal earnings past the $1-million mark and career total to nearly $2.3 million.
