Bamboo Yankee made a clean sweep of the New Jersey Sire Stakes series for 2-year-old trotting colts and geldings at Freehold Raceway with a 1:59.2 victory Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 27, in the $85,000 championship final.

With Jeff Gregory driving, the gelded son of Self Possessed closed in the stretch from fourth to first for a 1 1/4-length victory over Green Day. Year In Review finished third.

Bamboo Yankee had won all three of his preliminary legs of the series preceding the final, including a 1:59 clocking that established a Sire Stakes record for 2-year-old trotting geldings.

It was the fifth overall win in 11 starts this year, with the winner’s share of the purse boosting his career earnings to $187,030 for co-owners Ray Schnittker, Frank Baldassaro and Charles Iannazzo. Paul Doherty of the Schnittker Stable was the winning trainer.

Bamboo Yankee was a $40,000 yearling bred by Yankeeland Farms.
