On Tuesday night, Morrill sat patiently with the 1-9 favorite before unleashing him at the half. Archangel opened up late to win convincingly in 1:56 in the $119,594 New York Sire Stake, the richest race of the season to date at Saratoga.
The win moved the Arrigenna trainee's lifetime record to 11 for 24 and upped his career bankroll to more than $760,000.
The other division of the Sire Stakes saw a track record performance as Brookroad Knight (CR Excalibur) set the record for 3-year-old gelding trotters and matched the all-time mark for a 3-year-old highstepper at the Spa with his 1:55.2 score.
Wally Hennessey piloted Brookroad Knight to the wire-to-wire win in the $117,493 stake for sophomore trotters. Brookroad Knight is trained by Bruce Borden. (Saratoga)
