The 3-year-old trotting filly Atlanta, the fastest sophomore trotter this season with a victory in 1:50.3 at Vernon Downs, tuned up for the Hambletonian Oaks, or perhaps even the Hambletonian, on Wednesday morning at The Downs at Mohegan Sun Pocono.
Driver Scott Zeron sent Atlanta off the gate and before the opening quarter they were in front and in control. Zeron dictated fractions of :28.3, :57.4 (:29.1 second quarter) and 1:26.4 (:29) before giving Atlanta permission to sprint through the stretch. The filly by Chapter Seven turned in a sizzling :26 final quarter to hit the wire in 1:52.4, with the runner-up in the race 11 3/4 lengths back.
Atlanta is trained by Rick Zeron, Scott's father.
In the next qualifying race at Pocono Wednesday morning, Hempt Memorial winner Springsteen stayed on top of his game with a 1:52 victory over the mare Agent Q. Simon Allard drove Springsteen for his brother Rene, who trains the son of Rock N Roll Heaven.
