The Swedish trainer Ove Kristoffersson, once the groom for Dart Hanover, had at least 20 of his horses killed in a barn fire on Christmas Eve in Italy.
Kristoffersson had been working for Scuderia Sandra at their training center in Iesolo, but when the Sandra Stable discontinued their trotting business, he moved his stable to a training center in Vigone outside Turin.
He had his 31 trotters in two separate barns and when he got the alarm, one barn was already fully engulfed in flames, while six trotters in the other barn could be saved.
At least 20 trotters were killed, including the good 3-year-old Iton Lb (Pine Chip-Rialba Lb) 1:56.2 and the 4-year-old Ganimec, who took a mark of 1:55.3 and earned about $200,000.
Among the owners with horses in his stable were the Biasuzzis, who had Kristoffersson training their good 2-year-old Lovely Kronos (Muscles Yankee-Honey Lavec) 2:00.2.
