The Meadowlands Racetrack has requested to make up two of the programs lost to the state government shutdown with the addition to the 2006 racing schedule of Friday, August 11 and Saturday, August 12. The amended dates request will be considered by the New Jersey Racing Commission at its July 19 meeting.

Live harness racing was canceled at the Meadowlands on July 1 and July 5 through 7, a total loss of four programs, when employees of the state, including racing’s regulators, were furloughed during a budget impasse in the state legislature.

“These additional dates represent an opportunity for horsemen to make up for some of the lost racing opportunities due to the shutdown,” said Vice President for Racing Operations Chris McErlean. \"We also are going to plan a few other Guest Appreciation promotions for these two days to say thank you for our guests for their patience during the very inconvenient shutdown situation earlier this month,” McErlean added.

Previously, closing day for the January through August meet was scheduled for Hambletonian Day, August 5. (Meadowlands release)
