Brandnewgirlfriend and regular driver Boone Mattison two-moved to the lead in the second non-wagering event. The pair were out in 1:02, then home in :58.2 to complete the handiest of victories in 2:00.2. Naughty Nana (Jason Bartlett) chased from the pocket, beaten 2 1/4 lengths, while Serene Yankee (Andy Miller) was third.
Brandnewgirlfriend, a daughter of Conway Hall co-owned by trainer Paul Kelley, Jim Winske, Stephen Michaels and East Pond Stable, was unraced at two. She's now nine-for-10 this season (three-for-three here) with earnings in excess of $132,000.
"You really don't have to ask her for a lot during the mile," Mattison said. "She can leave much faster at most tracks, but here, you always have to make sure to get around the first turn.
"The way she's come around (from two to three) has been the best thing about her. She's learned what she's supposed to do.
"It's probably a good thing she didn't race last season," Mattison added. "That way, we didn't stake her a lot and we could just get her ready to race in New York. She can make enough money."
The night's fastest NYSS effort was turned in by Michelle's Way (Brent Holland), who went up and over J-Yo (Jeff Gregory) in early stretch in the first ($43,160) non-bettor. Michelle's Way, a Conway Hall lass trained by Ken Rucker, went on to win in 1:58.4. She widened to three lengths at the wire, with On With The Show (Bartlett) third.
Michelle's Way, with five wins in nine '09 tries, is closing in on six figures this season for owner Marcos Ameralis.
Tuesday night's part-of-the-card NYSS events, each at that $43,160 magic number, were won by: Winbak Roberta (by Plesac); owner Scuderia OM Srl/trainer Gregg DeSanto/driver Pat Berry; (life-best) 2:00.3/$5.20; Allie Jae (by Malabar Man); owner Chevon Ramsey/trainer Mike Forte/driver Gregory; (life-best) 1:59.4/$10.20; Porque (by Plesac); owner Richard Balog/trainer Linda Toscano/driver Gregory; (equal life-best) 2:01/$5.30.
