There was little movement throughout the course of the $285,362 Cane Pace for three-year-old pacers, sponsored by Fair Winds Farm/Cameo Hills Farm, but that set up for a thrilling stretch duel. Meadowlands Pace champion Captain Crunch and Scott Zeron used a pocket trip to perfection, pacing by runner-up Bettor’s Wish Saturday, August 3 at The Meadowlands with a 1:48 performance. Semi Tough finished third.

Bettor’s Wish dictated the terms for Dexter Dunn in the scratch-shortened field of seven. Zeron dropped his Captaintreacherous-Sweet Paprika colt in second in the last stakes event on Hambletonian Day, happy to sit through fractions of :26.2, :54.4 and 1:22. In the stretch, Zeron abandoned the rail and took the fight to Bettor’s Wish, passing the leader and picking up his fifth win in seven starts this season.

Trained by Nancy Johansson for 3 Brothers Stables, Christina Takter, Rojan Stables and Caviart Farms, Captain Crunch added a cool $142,681 to his card, which now sports career earnings of $1.27 million. The colt was bred by Walnridge Farm Inc. and Sherri Meirs. He paid $3.60, $2.10 and $2.10 with the win.
